Artist description of the work: "Fantails and kowhai are one of New Zealand’s favourite birds and one of our favourite native trees. The fantail - also known as piwakawaka - is the most common mainland native NZ bird. They can be found just about anywhere, from bush, to parks, urban locations, and gardens. They’re incredibly friendly birds, that often happily fly around within metres of people and are known for their loud ‘cheet cheet’ calls and impressive flight manoeuvres while catching insects. Hannah photographed this fantail in her backyard and combined it with a kowhai photo she took at Tiritiri Matangi Island. Although the fantail doesn’t feed on the kowhai tree (as its diet consists of mainly small invertebrates, rather than nectar or leaves), it’s a very important part of our ecosystem. It provides food for many of our native birds, such as kaka, tui, kereru and korimako. It is also a very popular tree in many kiwi gardens, due to its beautiful golden yellow flowers which bloom in spring."
