About Aurora Arts and Gifts
Aurora Arts and Gifts is a funky little shop with a unique range of locally and NZ made arts and gifts, as well as a great range of eco-friendly products. It is New Zealand's southern most gift shop; tucked away in a quirky little room at the garage on Stewart Island. For a little store, it packs a lot of punch!
Owner Tanya Dann has been a practicing artist herself for over 20 years. Having experience organising exhibitions around the country (through her work with the (now defunct) New Zealand Art Guild) has driven her desire to create a space on the island where local artists can show and sell their work after the closure of the previous gift shop. Thus Aurora Arts and Gifts was born.
Tanya's own work uses a variety of different media and disciplines. In particular Painting, Drawing, Textiles, Photography and Digital Art; she has also dabbled in Ceramics, Jewellery, Printmaking and Sculpture. She specialises in bright, bold, acrylic abstracts; graphite portraits of people and animals; and upcycled textile pieces.
For the past 4 years Tanya has called Stewart Island, New Zealand home. She has a varied background in art, clothing and textiles, horticulture, hospitality and zoology. In 2007 she completed a Certificate in Creative Studies, and attended Art School in Dunedin in 2008 before returning to her scientific roots in 2009. She now holds two Masters Degrees in Forensic Textiles and Entomology, both from Otago University. Her current body of artworks are shaped by her passion for science, her love of nature and the colours of the environment around her.
